Jean François Millet

Jean François Millet (1814-1875) è un pittore fondamentale nella storia dell’arte moderna. L’ esposizione mette in mostra la preferenza che Millet visse, come soggetto dei suoi quadri, per gli uomini e le donne al lavoro.Il disamore generale al lavoro – scriveva nel 1910 Charles Péguy – è la tara più profonda, la tara fondamentale del mondo moderno. Qualche decennio prima di Péguy, l’artista francese Jean François Millet aveva fatto del lavoro il tema prediletto della sua pittura: nei suoi dipinti esplode la sua simpatia profonda per la quotidiana fatica degli uomini.Il lavoro in Millet ha il valore di un’epopea che, mentre salva la dignità personale, partecipa all’opera corale della trasfigurazione della terra. Millet è particolarmente colpito dal lavoro dei campi, da quello che egli chiamerà “il grido della terra”: contadini, pastori, taglialegna sono i suoi eroi, gli umili protagonisti della storia da lui raccontata.
